Mardijanto (1927-2004) was a self-taught contemporary Indonesian artist whose work was deeply rooted in the tradition of batik while constantly pushing its boundaries. Introduced to the technique by his mother, he devoted his life to mastering and reinterpreting batik using the “canting”, transforming it from a traditional craft into a personal artistic style.
His early works drew from natural and coastal motifs, later evolving into more decorative compositions influenced by semi-cubism and impressionism. Alongside batik, he explored oil painting, reflecting a curiosity that resisted confinement to a single medium or style. Throughout his life, Mardijanto remained committed to experimentation, creating a body of work that bridges heritage and modern expression with quiet originality.
